Along with America’s independence, downtown Marion will celebrate the opening of its new ice cream shop on Wednesday.

Artesana Ice Cream will open for business on the Fourth of July at 76 S. Main St. This new artisan ice cream shop is taking over the space that used to be Weight Watchers. Located between Mr. Bob’s Do-Nuts and McDowell Local, Artesana Ice Cream promises to provide yet another place for people to enjoy something good and different to eat in downtown Marion.

The new business is owned and operated by Augustine and Sandra Precoma. Augustine has been in the ice cream business for more than 15 years himself. It comes naturally to him because it is his family’s tradition in Texcoco, Mexico.

What makes Artesana’s ice cream different is what goes into it. Like McDowell Local, this parlor will use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible to make it more flavorful. The Precomas said their blend of ice cream is made from all natural ingredients like locally sourced milk, honey and fresh fruit.

The fresh milk for the ice cream contains more calcium, protein and vitamins. And the flavors come from the fresh fruits and natural ingredients.

“We don’t use flavorings,” said Augustine Precoma. “We make it from scratch. That’s what makes it different. We use local products as much as possible.”

For example, the strawberries used in the ice cream come from a Pleasant Gardens grower while the honey is from an Old Fort producer. “We are willing to support the economy here,” said Sandra.

The back part of their shop has boxes of fresh fruits. Augustine uses recipes handed down through the generations and is inspired by his Mexican and Italian roots.

Artesana Ice Cream will have items on its menu that are vegan and lactose-free. There will be smoothies, a Mexican beverage called horchatas and some Italian flavors too.

Artesana will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. And unlike other cold dessert businesses, it will be open year-round.

As far as anyone can recall, this may be the first ice cream shop to open in downtown Marion. But the Precomas are aware that Marion already has some long established ice cream businesses with devoted followings. They added they are not trying to take any business away from Dot’s Dario or Jack Frost Dairy Bar.

Sandra said she considers Jack Frost owner Jim Burgin to be a good friend and has taken her kids there for ice cream. “I’ve known Jim for many years,” she said. “We really honor that tradition. My kids grew up with Jack Frost.”
